The Women’s Centre is a starting point for women. With locations in Flamborough and downtown Hamilton, our services will support and empower you to get and implement the help you need.

 

Individual Counselling
Changing your life is a process. Our individual counsellors will assist you in discovering your goals and identifying your options so that you can make informed decisions about your life.

Employment Counselling
In combination with our 'Women Getting Work Program', individual support is available to provide you with a  full assessment, job searching skills, resume writing, computer skills, interviewing skills and how to make a lasting impression both in the interview and as an employee.

Peer Support (Downtown Hamilton Location)
Our peer support volunteers provide confidential individual support in a safe and trusting environment for you to discuss life’s challenges.

Transitional Housing Support (Flamborough Location)
We can provide information and support on safety planning, assessing relationships, housing, financial matters, and other community referrals for women who have, or who are experiencing abuse.

 

Emergency Shelter

Thinking about coming into a shelter is the last thing that most women think they will ever do.  It is scary and most women fear what others will think, how do I tell the children, who else is in the shelter, or what will the rooms and food be like. Our shelter is located at 630 Sanatorium Rd. in Hamilton off of Garth and Mohawk.

Services we offer:

  • support through our 24 / hour 7 day a week crisis phone 905-387-8881
  • emergency transportation to the shelter may be provided at no cost
  • a 22 bed emergency shelter that offers a cozy room with a bathroom and many amenities 
  • food options to meet your dietary needs
  • counselling support available for women staying at the shelter and women in our community
  • information and assistance in seeking income support either through applying for Ontario Works or job searches
  • child and youth support for your children
  • information and support about / or how to access legal systems (family, criminal, immigration, child welfare, etc)
  • Housing supports (helping seek market or subsidized rentals)
  • Safety planning
  • Outreach transitional support worker

Legal Advocacy

Jared’s Place Legal Resource Centre is a place for women who have experienced domestic abuse and are going through legal system(s). This service is available to every woman who has stayed in the emergency shelter or from the community. (no fee for our services).

Our Legal Advocate can provide support, information, advocacy and referrals on a variety of legal topics.  She assists women in navigating through legal systems (family, criminal, child welfare, housing), creating safety plans, preparing documents and attending court and other legal appointments with women. She is not a lawyer and she is not a paralegal.                     

In addition to our many services we have partnered with Legal Aid Ontario to provide the following:

MentorAction

MentorAction is a group of male leaders who stand up and speak out in ending gender-based violence. For many years violence and abuse towards woman has been seen as  a woman's issue. Violence against women is a societal issue that we all need to have a united voice on. 

Since 2011 MentorAction has been raising awareness about the role men play in gendered violence and working to come up with strategies to redefine masculinity and make Hamilton and safer place.

In 2016 Interval House of Hamilton Purchased the rights of Be More Than A Bystander and brought this program to Hamilton through MentorAction. The Be More Than a Bystander campaign was created by the Ending Violence Association BC in partnership with the BC Lions. MentorAction partnered with the Hamilton Bulldogs, McMaster University Athletics, and The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and now Be More Than a Bystander is in our community. Through public service announcements, billboards, school programs, and sports programs we are re-educating our community.

Mission: To engage men as leaders in the campaign to end gender-based violence through the implementation of communication and mentorship strategies.
